Table Mountain Incident Status as at 12 August 2005
This map shows all recorded and mapped incidents since 1881. There are
684 incidents, the majority being in Platteklip (exhaustion and twisted ankles)
and at the
upper cable station (stranded tourists).
It's difficult to guess how complete the list of incidents is. We're
missing a fair amount of data for the years 1986-1987 and 2002-2003.
The incidents are coded according to patient colour. The majority of the
incidents occur on the slopes and approaches. Most are green or yellow
with few blue
patients and even fewer red patients. This is probably because the
majority of red patients don't last long.
It would be interesting to see if there is an increase in red patients over the
recent past, especially with the availability of Skymed. Unfortunately
examination of
the data does not (yet) indicate any increase of this nature other than the
usual proportional increase.
